“The assignment itself is to write a short essay of several paragraphs (often the format is called a ‘five-paragraph essay’ though the actual number of paragraphs may vary. Key elements of the overall structure is an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph, with each paragraph carefully and thoughtfully organized for English readers.

The topic of discussion is your own assessment of your writing abilities. Do you like to write? What grades are you used to getting on written work? How much time do you like to devote to writing? What weaknesses can you identify in your own work? What resources do you have at hand to improve your writing this semester, apart from the course itself? (Those of you with more experience in business studies may want to structure your body paragraphs around a SWOT-analysis

(Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats), but such a formal organization is by no means required for the essay.

At the same time that you discuss details and examples in your essay, please be reminded that readers prefer reading shorter essays, rather than longer ones. Balance your need to give information with your readers’ attention spans and distractions, so as to engage your
